Skywatch Friday - Dhamekh Stupa at Sarnath, Varanasi

Anyone who visit Varanasi visit the historic town of Sarnath. Located on the outskirts of Varanasi town, it is easily accessible. Exploring Sarnath requires at least half a day. The star attraction of Sarnath is the "Dhamekh Stupa" which towers into the sky at an height of 300 feet. It is believed to contain relics of Lord Buddha who delivered his first sermon to his disciples after enlightenment here. One of the holiest place for Buddhists.

We clicked this picture on a bright sunny morning in 2011 when we went on three weeks long road trip across central India.

Vignettes of Rural Bihar, India

These scenes can be seen in any part of rural India. When we were driving from Siliguri to Bodhgaya we happened to drive through the Gangetic plains of Bihar in North India. A region where agriculture is the main livelihood and farmer is the king. The life here revolves around farming.

It was evening and the fog was enveloping even as the sun started setting in the horizon. Long stretches of greenery was separated only by the black tarmac. Kids were playing in the field. Cattle were returning back from their graze. Women were preparing the hearth. Men were drinking chai with a beedi and discussing local politics. Life goes on in the villages. Leisurely. Stress free.

Here are some pictures we took on the way.

A boy enjoying a horse ride
A girl preparing fodder for cattle
What's cooking?
Discussing what is to be done next day in the farm
Country roads take me home
Preparing fodder for Summer
Don't disturb. I am having my evening snack. Notice that cattle are also covered from biting cold
Waiting for the next customer
Filling up the sacks with farm produce
Separating seed from the chaff
The day is over!
All in a day's work
Cricket is India's passion!
What's up?
Inspecting the farm on a horse
We are loving this!!
It was a lovely drive in the evening through the heartland of Bihar where life was easygoing unlike the one we lead in mega cities.

Monday Images - Socotra, Beautiful & Surreal!

We all hate Mondays, don't we? In this series, we thought of pep you up with a nice picture every Monday. A picture we liked during our search on the web. A camera is traveller's constant companion and we all love to take pictures when we travel.  These pictures are taken by others in places either we have been to or not.

It must be a year ago when we read an article in National Geographic magazine on Yemen. Typical of NG, the article on Yemen carried some mesmerising images of unspoilt and secluded areas with gorgeous beaches, azure waters and to top it all surreal landscape of dragon trees and desert roses. From that moment, Yemen got into the list of the places we want to visit some day. Political situation in the country has ensured very few visit this lovely land of friendly people.

The region in Yemen we were talking about is known as "Socotra" - A UNESCO World Heritage site. Socotra (3,625 sq kms) which is part of the Republic of Yemen, is one of the most isolated landforms on Earth of continental origin (i.e., not of volcanic origin). The third of its plant life is found nowhere else on the planet. It has been described as the most alien-looking place on Earth.

The island was recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a world natural heritage site in July 2008.”

We need to go there before the crowd arrive. Sooner the better.

Back of the blog - Holi in Vrindavan and Utah

Holi Hai!!

We know you will love this post. Holi, the festival of colours falls on 17 March. Two places you should go to experience the spirit of Holi are in Vrindavan in North India and in the State of Utah in the USA.

Poorna always keep talking about Holi in North India. Sometimes i am envious of him as he has seen this all going around the country while in Army. In South India, though celebrated as big festival, still not the way it is celebrated in North, especially in Uttar Pradesh. Vrindavan considered the holy land of Lord Krishna comes alive in a riot of colours for three weeks during this time. The energy, the spirit and the bonhomie among the people in Holi is seen to be believed.

Legend says that Lord Krishna played Holi with 16,000 Gopikas during this period. Splash of colours, grand processions of gods, legends enacted on stage, holi songs......everything get entwined during this time making it an unforgettable experience. Holi solemnises the love of Radha and Krishna. The spraying of colour recalls the love sport of Lord Krishna and His devotees. The colours, noise and entertainment that accompanies the celebration of Holi bears witness to a feeling of oneness and sense of brotherhood. The festival brings home the lesson of spiritual and social harmony!!

We don't want to burden you with more details on mythology. All we say is just go there and have fun. Watch people enjoy. Watch people's reverence to the Lord. Watch people's simple ways of having fun. These Holi Images below just depict that.

 Quick tips

a) Make sure you go to all the key villages where Holi is played - Nandgaon, Vrindavan and Barsana
b) The biggest gathering will be in Banke Bihari temple. Don't miss it.
c) If you are a female traveller travelling alone, it would make sense to go with a friend. Though we don't see any major safety issues as such, it is better to err on the safer side!
d) The crowd sometimes gets boisterous and unruly. Be prepared for it.
e) Don't worry if some one splash colour on you. It is all fun.
f) It will be good to wear protective eye gear so that eyes are protected from colours splashing into it.
g) Try and eat "Bhang Pakoda" - Opium laced onion fritters and drink "Bhang Lassi" - Opium laced yogurt. We bet, you would love it :-)

J) Gayle Lawrence captures the spirit of Holi on the streets of Vrindavan here.

When we were googling for some pictures on the net, we were surprised to see another festival of colours celebrated 10,000 miles away from Vrindavan. In the State of Utah in USA. It looks crazy out there and the spirit resembles Vrindavan. The only difference seemed to be the absence of reverence, mythology and divinity which is attached to celebrations in Vrindavan. We haven't been there and this one gets added to our bucket list!

It is nice to see people are same around the world. All we need is an excuse to splash colours at each other! Nevertheless, it is time to get coloured. Time to enjoy. These images of holi sure will pull you out to Vrindavan or Utah!

Back of the blog - Here we will share tit-bits and snippets on India/World Travel which may be useful for a traveller. It may be some new information about the place, a new cuisine one can explore, a bit of history, a funny anecdote or a good travel book. Anything connected to Travel.

Skywatch Friday - St Clair's Falls, Sri Lanka

We were driving from Nuwara Eliya to Hatton. The sky was overcast. The road was in bad condition as they were widening it and we had to slow down. We did not mind it as the landscape of Hatton valley was outstandingly beautiful. Suddenly we saw this lovely falls. Thanks to good rains over the previous week, the falls had some water.

Called us "Niagara of Sri Lanka", it is situated 3 km west of the town of Talawakele on the Hatton-Talawakele Highway in Nuwara Eliya District. The falls derive its name from a nearby tea estate. The Falls is 80m high and hence 20th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. St. Clair's falls comprises two falls called "Maha Ella" (Sinhalese "The Greater Fall") and "Kuda Ella," (Sinhalese "The Lesser Fall") which is 50m high and was created by a tributary of Kotmale Oya.

Ten things to do this summer in India you haven't done before!

The winter is almost over. As the temperatures rise in the country, exams end for children, it is time for another summer vacation. Vacationing in Summer means heading to the hills. To enjoy the pleasant weather and come back refreshed. We have all done that. Is there anything that is interesting we can do apart from what has been done?

Here is our list.

Cycling in Nilgiris

Weather in Ooty and Nilgiris is pleasant during Summer. Going up and down the hills may be tiring but is worth it. Breathe fresh air as you pedal through the winding roads. You don't have to be a professional cyclist to enjoy this experience.

Monday Images - Vistas of Karakoram Highway

We all hate Mondays, don't we? In this series, we thought of pep you up with a nice picture every Monday. A picture we liked during our search on the web. A camera is traveller's constant companion and we all love to take pictures when we travel.  These pictures are taken by others in places either we have been to or not.

Being roadtrippers, a drive on Karakoram highway on the Silk route from Pakistan to China is in our bucket list. Not sure when that will happen but we would love to do this one day. We have heard and read about the splendid views of Karakoram range, Khunjareb pass etc., Ever Since we read Eric newby's classic "A Short Walk in Hindu Kush"and Michael Palin's book "Travels in Himalayas", we always wanted to go on this road.

When we were browsing the pictures of Karakoram highway on the net we saw some lovely vistas from fellow travellers which we thought of sharing with you.
