Skywatch Friday - St Clair's Falls, Sri Lanka

We were driving from Nuwara Eliya to Hatton. The sky was overcast. The road was in bad condition as they were widening it and we had to slow down. We did not mind it as the landscape of Hatton valley was outstandingly beautiful. Suddenly we saw this lovely falls. Thanks to good rains over the previous week, the falls had some water.

Called us "Niagara of Sri Lanka", it is situated 3 km west of the town of Talawakele on the Hatton-Talawakele Highway in Nuwara Eliya District. The falls derive its name from a nearby tea estate. The Falls is 80m high and hence 20th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. St. Clair's falls comprises two falls called "Maha Ella" (Sinhalese "The Greater Fall") and "Kuda Ella," (Sinhalese "The Lesser Fall") which is 50m high and was created by a tributary of Kotmale Oya.

If you are travelling in Sri Lanka, don't miss the drive from Nuwara Eliya to Hatton. It is a lovely drive. If you travel after the rains you will be greeted by numerous waterfalls on the way.

Skywatch Friday - Gregory Lake, Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya in the Hill country of Sri Lanka is a lovely little town. It still oozes the bygone era of British which can be seen in some of the heritage buildings in the city. It is a nice place to laze around. A good place for picking up a bicycle and move around.

The star attraction in Nuwara Eliya town is the charming Gregory lake. When we passed through the town during our trip in Sri Lanka, we stopped over and enjoyed the boating in this peaceful lake. The lake is not crowded like the ones we see in India and also very clean. The surrounding hills add beauty to the place.

This picture was taken in the afternoon of a cloudy day. Fortunately it did not rain!

Skywatch Friday - A Home in Hill country, Sri Lanka

This was clicked while we were driving - we did take a self drive car - in the Hill country of Sri Lanka during last Christmas.

The hill country in Sri Lanka is magnificently beautiful and we were driving in the interior parts of it. In the week before Christmas, the island had received lot of rains. Luckily when we were driving, the weather was sunny but wet. It was around 10 AM when we crossed this place and could not wait to stop and click this.

The red roofed bungalow - must be that of tea estate manager's - was a lovely contrast to the green around. The clouds above made it look more pretty.

Cricket Club Cafe - Eat Cricket, Drink Cricket, Watch Cricket!

Where can you munch a "Dickie Bird Burger" while sipping "Miandad Mango Magic" and finish off with "Bishan Bedi Brownie" for dessert!?

Yes, you need to head to the Cricket Club Cafe in Colombo for this amazing experience. Located in a colonial British bungalow with lovely verandahs and lawns, the cafe is a must visit for a Cricket lover. Even if you aren't one, it is an interesting place to hang out in Colombo and have pint of draught on a sunny afternoon!

This was one of the "Things to do" for us when we visited Sri Lanka during last Christmas. It was a lazy afternoon when we headed to this iconic place. As we entered through the large gate, we were greeted by signs with directions to all major cricket stadiums in the world!

Entering inside, we were pleasantly surprised at the display of Cricket memorabilia. Lovingly done by the Australian couple James and Gabrielle who have ensured that every visitor to the cafe go back with fond memories. The English pub named Bradman bar has many memorabilia of Sir Don. Each corner of the large house is dedicated to a Cricket playing nation and memorabilia of some of the legends of cricket is on display here.

Let us not now take you through a pictorial tour of the place.

Sri Lanka - Masks Galore!

Your blog is turning a bit International.

As we move into the spirit of Yuletide, we thought that it would be good to expand our horizon and share some of our experiences outside India as well. The blog will continue to stay India focussed with bits from our travel experiences outside the country. It is like adding spices to a well made curry!

Last year we were in Sri Lanka during Christmas and we had a lovely time. Being road trippers, it was a driving holiday in a self drive car! More about in this blog later. Before we share our experience, we thought of sharing this picture, which speaks a world of how charming the small little island is.
